Ferrol
An urban hub since the middle of the 18th century, with a port sheltered by an estuary specially protected from the coast.
The city of Ferrol as we know it today was born as a true urban nucleus in the middle of the 18th century, in the century dominated by the spirit of the Enlightenment. It is indisputable that this city has had a historical dependence on the naval, public and military sectors, since it was created by a R.O. in 1726 as a naval base to control the maritime interests of Spain.
Until then, the original population was settled in the area now occupied by the district of Ferrol Vello, in a port sheltered by an estuary specially protected from the coast. This geographical situation would later be decisive in the choice of this place as the ideal place for the settlement of the naval factories that would make its later development possible.
The Ferrol of the Enlightenment (the city of the Arsenal around which the whole of this territory marked by the traces of the Andrade family and one of the gateways of the Camino Inglés to Santiago is articulated) or the castle of Moeche (protagonist of the historical event of the Revolta dos Irmandiños) make up the letter of introduction to these lands. But the north of the province of A Coruña is an exceptional territory where visitors can enjoy spectacular sandy beaches, picturesque villages that preserve the essence of the purest Galicia, a privileged gastronomy and unique natural areas of beauty. The most northerly point of the Iberian Peninsula (Estaca de Bares), the lagoon of A Frouxeira, visited every year by thousands of migratory birds, the cliffs of Serra da Capelada hanging up to 600 metres vertically above the sea, the sanctuary of San Andrés de Teixido (where "he who was not alive must go when he died") are enormous secrets waiting to be discovered by the traveller.
