Pontedeume – Betanzos

e begin this Pontedeume - Betanzos stage with this section of the Camino through the Calle Real, in this case also arcaded. The exit of Pontedeume is carried out by a steep slope of one kilometre, which gives way to a gentle descent with agricultural landscapes to reach sea level again, at the height of the bridge of Baxoi that saw so many pilgrims pass through in the Middle Ages. This is the prelude to the town of Miño, which we leave behind to enter the mouth of the Lambre, part of the Natura 2000 Network. We go up a small stretch of the river and cross a Gothic bridge, to then ascend and reach a height from which we can see the mouth of the river Mandeo, which forms the Betanzos estuary.

The Romanesque church of Tiobre is an obligatory stop. Before the pilgrim is a descent through vineyards. A wine that had great fame and was much sought after by the British Navy. From there, a climb starts up to a renaissance temple, something rare in Galicia: Nosa Señora do Camiño, also called Os Remedios. Crossing the old bridge over the Mandeo, we enter Betanzos through the gate of A Ponte Vella, one of the five of the old city walls. A visit to its churches is a must, especially the church of San Francisco, with the cenotaph of Fernán Pérez de Andrade, which is recognised as the best preserved in Galicia.
